FAHRENHEIT 365

Fahrenheit 356 is a collaborative design workshop that moves between the utopia of the library as a space to be collectively imagined, and the heterotopia of books as artefacts that contain the stories and imagined spaces of a culture. The project draws on the thermal metaphor of Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 to rethink the role of the book, fiction, reading, and art as activating and binding forces within El Prat’s cultural ecology, through the design of a public library.

If the 451 degrees Fahrenheit of the novel signal the combustion point of paper and the tyranny of a world in which books are persecuted, the 356 degrees of the laboratory point instead to a process of fusion: the melting together of papers and roles, of agents, bodies, institutions, and technologies engaged in the invention of a new library space. This alliance positions Fahrenheit 356 as an opportunity to rethink the library as a site of expression and a vehicle for community life.

Fahrenheit 356 is a project developed for Interseccions. It responds to the need to create a collaborative design space involving Interseccions, Institut del Prat, Teatre de l’Artesà, and the Cèntric Cultural Centre, in order to envision the creation of a new public library.
